I’m a switcher!
I have just received last friday my new server, basically an Xserve G5 [en] with two 2.3Ghz processors and 2Gb of RAM. This configuration cost me around 6200 € which is quite expansive but if you consider you have about 1000 € of software, about 960 € of warranty for 3 years and 1030 € of taxes, this makes it finally a real cost around 3500 €. Such a price for this kind of server is a pretty good deal I think!

I’ve only bought one 250Gb hard-drive and do not really plan to buy some more for hardware RAID because as soon as possible, I’ll try to buy an Xserve RAID [en] (about 8900 € for the one I’m interested in - 4×400Gb + fiber channel card + additional battery + 3 years warranty + taxes).

I had been waiting for such a long time since I ordered it, that I was really happy to use it this week-end. This is definitely a lightning fast machine. I could not find any pre-installed application that was able to overload the server, so I just ran a compilation of PostgreSQL [en]. Then the magic happened, I was able to have the two-lines of LEDs show the per-processor activity and hear the fans accelerate in order to compensate the heat. The noise is really impressive: you can hear the fans progressively accelerating…
Anyway, this server should be enough for multiple web applications using Spring [en], Tapestry [en] and of course Jini [en].
